about

This is a song I wrote and recorded in my bedroom while doing a songwriting course last fall. Our prompt was to not be on our phones very much, especially in the mornings and evenings, and to meditate for 20 minutes first thing after waking up. Whatever came up is what the song would be about. It's important to note that this prompt was meant to help the writer let go, and to not worry much about what is being said. There was also a rule that spoken word must be included somewhere in the song. After the first morning meditation, I feverishly scribbled the words that came to mind, as well as the movements I felt happening around me.

I felt a draw to share this as the fall equinox bestows itself upon us–– mostly due to its rawness and imperfection, but also because it could provoke others to write a song in this format. It was really helpful for my songwriting. (Oh, and also because sharing all parts of me seems worth it. And who really cares, really?) Hope you enjoy, and happy writing to you!

lyrics

Maybe life is watching your hair grow longer
I can hardly wait to take the braids out of mine
To see how they've chosen to crease

Just moments ago, a gust of wind whisked across the top of my head
Or was it a ghost?
Or my grandmother
I hope we get to be surrounded by such beauty always

Sitting with eyes closed, I can feel one of the two cats who live in this home walk behind me
I know it's mine
My deaf cat

I know the sound of his feet as I try to be still without my own vision
Does this mean we share something?
Little interwoven threads we are

By now we eat
Candlelight around me
Soothingly healing
A peach and my pocketbook
